Black Momentum, Part No 1, Space
2023, Installation 75 x Ink on China paper à ca. 530 - 550 cm x ca. 44 cm Room size: 70 m2, room height: 3.12 m Photos: Roberto Conciatori; exhibition situation, B74 Space for Art, 2023 The exhibition is divided into two exhibition rooms in which different installations are realised. They show aspects of the same theme in different ways. In front of the entrance to the large exhibition space, a narrow black paper panel hanging from the ceiling leaves a narrow passageway open. This allows a limited view into the exhibition space. As a viewer, you have to step slowly and carefully through this narrow passage into the large room. As soon as you are in the room, you are completely surrounded by further strips of black paper saturated with ink. The entire room is completely lined with the paper bands, which hang from the ceiling in a strict grid. The surrounding architectural space fades completely into the background. A whole new space is created by which one is completely surrounded, enveloped and into which one can immerse oneself. The light is dimmed and the outside space is only a shadowy drawing on the windows, for these are covered with a fine white curtain. The light in the exhibition space changes constantly with the ever-changing daylight and weather conditions. The room appears self-contained. An atmospheric silence is created. One feels as if one has been transported into a timeless, sacred, even mystical space. As a viewer, you are invited to move through the space and to discover it anew again and again. This requires "getting involved" and time. The paper webs develop a strong physical presence in their individuality as powerful, abstract-sculptural figures. As a viewer, one is completely surrounded and confronted with black. This is a challenge that you first have to get involved with, because you are thrown back on yourself, your emotions, images and associations. So it's all about the individual experience that one can have in this new kind of architecture. Each sculptural panel has its own individuality and characteristics. Through the surface texture and the different incidence of light, the black can be experienced in the most diverse nuances. It shimmers white, reddish-brown, anthracite or even greenish on the robust-looking surface, which can be reminiscent of slate rock, black burnt skin or leather. Sometimes the black is impenetrable jet black. A breeze as one passes or a touch causes the paths to turn, changing their position in the overall constellation, which dissolves the strict grid and constantly evokes new perspectives of space and thus new images. The abstract sculptures very quickly remind one of human figures, although this impression is also deconstructed again. Black as a colour is very significant in terms of cultural and art history. The character of the installation evokes history. As challenging as the personal experience may be on the reception level, this experiential space nevertheless invites us to pause and reflect. The abstract, open form of the conceptually minimalist spatial installation allows freedom for personal images and interpretations. The artist Stella Pfeiffer invited Urban Maeder, a sound artist from Lucerne, to respond to the space installation. Urban Maeder explored the work with sound and movement. He presented two performances as part of Kunsthoch on 26 August 2023. The following link shows a ten-minute excerpt from the first performance:
